Day 25
Got off to an early start at 7:30 this morning. Decided that we would drive to Stewart, BC and Hyder, Alaska (last day to be in Alaska) to see if we could see some bears. So started back out on the Cassiar Hwy then took Hwy 37 to Stewart. It was about 50 miles to Stewart. Saw some neat glaciers and visited Fish Creed Wildlife Viewing area. Negative results on bears there, but  did see some Sockeye salmon and one golden eagle. Returned back to the Cassiar and headed for Prince Rupert. Along the way we were able to catch a glimpse of some bears several different times. We were pretty excited. We stopped and ate dinner at a rest area. While checking out the view, I noticed one of the tires was going bad. Thought there was a station back at Hwy 37, so we drove back and of course, there was no station! Such a quandary! We could drive back to Stewart or continue on towards Prince Rupert. Started back towards Prince Rupert with the closest services about 75 miles. We have roadside assistance, but no way to make cell calls out in the middle of the wilderness—no service! Driving at 40 mph decided to take a chance and see if we would change the tire. These are 80 lb. tires and the suggested jacking sites are blocked by attachments on the RV. Finally able to get the jack on a cross-member, get the 8 lug nuts loosened and change the tire. Ouch! Our backs are killing us. Took about 1 ½ hours and really threw the schedule off. Found an RV park in Kitwanga BC and pulled in there about 7:45 p.m. Tired but relieved that we are rolling on 4 good tires.

Changed our plans and will not got to Prince Rupert now, but instead will head to Prince George which will help us be a little farther for tomorrow. This will ease some of the distance we have left to Seattle.

ANDY’S REPORT:
The peeps got up before the sun came up. They seemed ready to roll. Dad made some egg sandwiches, brewed some coffee and off we went. The weather was a little cloudy so the peeps were disappointed. We finally stopped and took a break. There was a lot of grass so I enjoyed it. We then drove through a lot of big hills up and down. I saw some frozen water hanging on the mountains. We then drove to a town that was on a big body of water. The peeps got all excited and said they were going to look for something called a bear. They came back with sad faces. No bears. We then took off back up the same hills. All of a sudden the peeps stopped and were jumping around looking out the window. I saw some big black hairy thing and gave him a woof! He looked like he was eating the bushes—yuk! I think we saw one or two more of these hairy things. Dad would not let me out to chase them. Boring! We then drove up the road, stopped and finally ate some chow. Drove some more. Stopped. The peeps had to fix the moving house.  We then drove on, went through some place with lots of trees with no leaves that had faces on them—strange! Finally found the place with lots of other moving houses. Dad took me for a walk and I’m going to bed. Goodnight.

Got to keep moving on these breaks--bear country!

Did someone say bears?

What's that big black thing? Woof! Woof!

Who ever heard of trees with faces and no limbs?

  2. I'm not laughing at the tire story. I would be in no position to change a tire on my Sprinter. What was the problem with the tire that caused you concern??

How many miles on the set of tires when you left on the trip? I'm going to try and time my Alaska trip so that I have 6 new tires to start and hope they last the whole trip. (fingers crossed)
