Day 15

Wow! What a cold night! 27 degrees when we got up.  I placed a cup with some water outside, froze, but still had water inside the cube.  After finally warming up, we drove to the bus stop for Denali and took a 6 ½ hour ride.  The driver was very informative and we learned a lot.  We took some beautiful pictures.  We drove from sunny blue skies, to overcast and snow. We could not see Mt McKinley, so hopefully on our way south Sunday we might get lucky. The driver stopped at a point where he said you could see the mountain, but to no avail.  He also advised that it was still about 60 miles away from that area.  What an adventure!  It was fairly cold most of the day. After we returned, took Andy for a walk.  Ate grill cheese and tomato soup for dinner.  We walked over to the Riley Creek Mercantile, got some coffee and cleaned up.  We are working on the blog without internet so may not be able to post till Sunday.  Off to Anchorage tomorrow.
Beginning our journey into Denali National Park

It's cold here, and yes, I do have blue jeans on!!

Teklanika River--29 miles into Denali National Park

Toklat River 53 miles into Denali National Park

Malcolm nearly had a heart attack on this steep and narrow road our bus traveled! Worse than than Top of the World Highway!
Grizzly Bear at Denali National Park
The grizzly bear was really far away--we used our telephoto lens.
Moose at Denali National Park
We got real quiet on the bus and the moose slowed down.
Dall Sheep very high up on the mountainside--they appear as dots. We couldn't tell they were sheep until we blew our picture up.
Caribou at Denali National Park
The caribou kept looking right at our bus.
A flock of Ptarmigan on the side of the road--the Alaska state bird

Beautiful fall colors in the valley at Denali National Park as we returned from the bus trip.
PS:  Donna spotted the bear.  Not sure if anyone else would have. She did good.

MILES TODAY      4     TOTAL  4745

Had to snuggle with the peeps last night. Whew, was it chilly!!  Dad had some kind of bag he got into and I snuck in there while he was sleeping. The peeps loaded up and away we went. I figured another day of driving and stopping, but we only went down the street.  We stopped in a big lot with other moving houses.  The peeps told me to guard the moving house.  Hee hee! As soon they were gone straight to napper time.  Boy I really needed that.  The peeps showed up but I did not hear them.  They might have caught me sleeping, can’t tell.  We went back to the same place as last night. We then had dinner. Looks like it’s going to be a cold night again! Dad finally turned on some other type of heater.  I’m ready to get under the covers. Goodnight.
Love the cold weather!

They finally came and got me! Guard duty, aka nap time, is over!
Goodnight!

  1. I've done some trips in my area (Niagara Falls, Ontario) during the winter when the temps dropped into the low 20's and even into the teens. Definitely on the chilly side in the mornings ... or a nighttime bathroom run. Brrrr ....

Are you using the furnace much ... just in the mornings?? I generally don't leave mine on at night because I have tons of bed clothes and comforters. But in occasion I keep it on the lowest setting and it does come on several times through the night.

I still prefer to travel in the cooler weather though.

Once again ... some spectacular scenery!!!!!!!!!
